Nate Hamilton (@nhamilto85) is a veteran and was introduced to watersports about 3 years ago through Team Semper Fi who taught him how to ocean surf. After a few months he started learning how to wake surf and wakeboard through Wake for Warriors. Wake for Warriors is an amazing organization that strives to get veterans out on the water and to teach them the sport.
Nate had this to say about his experience thus far: “Water is healing and I just want to allow others the opportunity to have the experience and joy from something I know has helped me. WFW has gotten folks out on the water from paras, amputees, walking paras, to invisible wounds like TBI and PTSD to illness. There is no discrimination at all. The whole Wake community has embraced Wake for Warriors and what the crew is doing all over the country and passing the handle so to speak. It has become a family.”
“It’s been great to see other veterans get out on the water and go from being closed off and apprehensive so to speak, to having the biggest smile imaginable when they get to ride that wave or stand up on the wakeboard. It’s the most rewarding thing ever.”
Nate has teamed up with One More Wave as an Ambassador. These guys make custom boards for veterans that meet their specific needs in a board. They worked with Nate for over a week and figured out how they can make a board tailored to him.
Nate has been attending events through the years through WFW and 1MW. He started to get into competitions this past year in wake surfing. Right before nationals this past year Nate’s hard work had paid off and he was finally able to stand and surf instead of kneeling a week before nationals. He quickly changed his entry from sitting division to standing. It was a great ending to his season. Next year he is set to continue to get better and making it a priority to advance in the adaptive wake surf and wakeboard divisions.
