Hidden Costs to Owning a Jet Ski

You might be considering buying a jet ski and wondering how much it is going to cost you.  Typically new jet ski’s range from $5,000 to $20,000 depending on the quality, style and features equipped on a jet ski.  But the cost to own a jet ski goes much further. There is a number of different costs that must be accounted for. These other factors include insurance, fuel, maintenance, a trailer and the many accessories that can go along with your new watercraft.

Insurance

Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $500 annually in insurance.  Insurance is based on the make, model and year of your PWC. The more expensive your PWC is the more expensive your insurance will be.  Other factors that affect how much you will pay is the horsepower, engine type and any modifications that have been made. One way to often lower your insurance rates is by taking a boaters safety course.

Fuel

For fuel one factor to figure out is the GPH which is the average gallons per hour consumed by a jet ski.  This number can fluctuate on how you ride your PWC, if you are going full throttle all the time expect this number to be around 10, if you are more casual the GPH can be cut by more than half to 4-5.  Newer crafts are starting to have better GPH. The average jet ski gets about 30 hours of riding a year meaning that you can expect to burn 120-300 gallons in a year. Depending on gas prices you should expect to spend $300-600+ annually.

Maintenance

Ongoing maintenance is another cost that will need to be accounted for.  Seasonal maintenance includes an oil change and fluid check, if your model is a bit older you might have some additional repair costs.  Expect to spend about $100 to get this done. Depending on your location you might need to winterize your jet ski every winter which will be an additional cost.

One Time Fixed Cost

If you don’t already have a PWC trailer you will need to get one.  Trailers can cost anywhere between $250 to $1,500 depending on how nice of one you want.  The one upside to the trailer is that it should last longer than the jet ski.

Summary

All together if you are looking to buy a PWC expect to be paying more than $500 a year with the necessary expenses that are listed above, if you have a nicer jet ski you can easily cross the $1,000 mark with insurance being pricey.

Other Accessories

An accessory that isn’t necessary but a ton of fun is adding music to your jet ski.  There’s a couple of different options that you can do. You can buy a PWC with speakers already equipped this will cost around $1,000 and up to $2,000 depending on the package you select.  Another option is to do it yourself and mount some bluetooth speakers right onto the jet ski. This doesn’t always work the best and depending on where you place them and the quality of speaker that you use you might only be able to hear the music at certain speeds.  This option is slightly cheaper but will still run you at least a few hundred dollars.

We came up with another option called the Groove Vest.  The Groove Vest is a jet ski vest with integrated speakers that brings music loud and clear to the rider.  The vest has two built in speakers near the shoulder area and only a few inches away from the riders ear, overcoming sound being drowned out by engine or wind noise.  It also has built in memory so you don’t need to bring your phone out on the water and a full control panel right on the front of the vest making it easy to change songs, pause your music or turn it up!  We are launching this summer and the Vests will retail for $299, but you can sign up to receive an exclusive discount for our launch.
