Some of you may have tried to wakeboard before or are thinking about getting started, but you have zero idea how to even get started. Getting up is the first step and in my opinion, the hardest part of wakeboarding. But don’t worry, I am here to make this a little easier. I'll go over a few tips so you can be shredding in no time! You will learn how to get up on a wakeboard, turn on a wakeboard and land your first jump!
Getting Up on a wakeboard
First, start by getting comfortable in the wakeboard itself. Making sure the bindings fit correctly and having the right size board is important for getting up for the first time on a wakeboard. Second, don’t be afraid of falling: it may take a couple tries to get up, but don’t lose hope.
Next, let’s talk about getting up. You want to sit in the water in an athletic stance. This means you want your core to be tight, back to be strong (not rounded), and your knees to be slightly bent. As the boat goes into gear, you want the rope to be tight above the middle of the board and it be almost difficult to hold onto because of the force of the board in the water. As the boat speeds up, you want to let the boat pull you up. This means that you should not try to stand up, but rather let the boat pull you out of the water while keeping your back straight.
Once you get up, you need to pick a side in which to turn to. Many beginner riders ride with their left foot forward, but that doesn’t mean you have to do that. Pick a side that feels comfortable to stay up and SEND IT!!! Always remember to not lean back too far and to keep that core tight!
How to Turn on a Wakeboard
Once you learn how to get up on a wakeboard, what is the next move to get better? That movement is turning. Being able to cut and move around the wake is very important for progressing in wakeboarding. The easiest turn to make is called a heel side cut. All you do is shift your weight onto your heels while making sure you keep the handle close to you. This allows you to really feel the board underneath you and how the board wants to move through the water allowing you to make the turn. The toe side turn is very similar to the heel side turn, but shifting your weight to the toe side of the board. This allows you to cut back to the toe side without trying to twist your hips causing you to catch a toe or heel and crash.
Learning to Jump on a Wakeboard
Once you become comfortable riding a wakeboard, you may want to try and jump. So many people have it in their heads that its super easy to jump, and it is, but it takes some practice. Some call it a surface jump and some call it an “ollie” like on a skateboard. The movement is very similar to an ollie on a skateboard. You want to put more weight on your back leg, and then lift with the front. This allows the majority of the board to get airborne, leaving the back part of the board in the water. Once you lift that front foot, begin to shift your weight slowly back to that front foot, while tucking that back leg to your hips and bringing that entire board out of that water. Just make sure you don’t shift too much weight to the front foot or else you will end up on our Wipeout Wednesday's!
