Featured Rider: Nathan Sharley

We are starting up a new series where we will feature riders and tell their story.  If you are interested in being featured you can hit us up and tell us your story.  Nathan is this months featured rider and has been an Ambassador of Groove Watersports from the start.  He is a passionate Wakeboarder who loves to help out.  He is testing out our vests this summer to ensure that they exceed the standards of every rider.  I wanted to share some insights on how rad Nathan is and I recently sat down with him to ask him some questionsNathan

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Nathan Sharley. I am 21 years old and am from Orlando, Fl. Growing up on Lake Conway, I was always on the lake. Whether it was tubing, wake surfing, or wakeboarding, I was on the water just about every single day that the weather permitted. I actually didn’t start wakeboarding more seriously until I was about 14 or 15 years old. That’s when I rode in a few competitions, but unfortunately school kind of took over me riding every single day. I still love to go out with friends to go rip every now and again because honestly there’s nothing like going out for a ride especially when the water is perfect. I still go out and ride with a couple guys on the PWT, and that’s what gives the motivation to get better every single time I ride. They always push me to try new tricks and to learn something new every day. Wakeboarding is one of the most important parts of my life and I am thankful to be a part of the Groove Watersports team. I’ve never met a group of guys as awesome as the Groove team, and am stoked to be a part of this this crazy, cool company

What is your Favorite Trick?

My favorite trick to do behind a boat has to be just a simple heel side indy grab 360. When I ride, I don’t have to do a bunch of crazy tricks to go have fun. There is honestly no better feeling than stomping such a simple trick and riding away super clean. I love being able to try different tweaks with my board on a 360 because I have so much extra time in the air rather than having to worry about spinning or getting the rotation of a flip in. There are many different styles that are so much fun to do with this trick too. Sometimes boosting into the flats can give you even more time for a board poke or a different style grab, but then landing past the white wash into the flats is a crazy feeling when you ride away from it. I also like being able to spin slower allowing me to hold the grad longer which makes the trick look more complex than it actually is.

You said you sometimes ride with some guys on the PWT, what is your favorite trick to see them hit?

As for my favorite trick to watch? That’s a whole different story. My favorite trick to watch would have to be double half cab. That trick has always blown my mind that riders can do two flips in the air while still keeping their composure to land the trick and not under or over rotate. Seeing pro riders and even other jr. riders land this trick is one of the coolest things to watch.

What New Trick do you want to land this Summer?

I have been thinking about trying a heelside 720 soon. This trick has been haunting me for so long and I have only tried it a couple times. Just about every time attempting this trick, I have either under rotated and caught a heel or missed the second handle pass and fallen pretty hard. It is so hard mentally to keep trying a trick knowing you will fall so many more times. Hopefully this summer I’ll be able to ride a juicy wake and overcome this trick that has been haunting me for so long.

Who is your Favorite Rider on the PWT?

My favorite rider on the PWT is Tony Iacconi. Tony is a very good friend of mine and he is someone that I respect so much. His dedication to the sport is unlike any other as well as his insane talent. So many times I will see him out riding at sunrise even if the water is choppy or the weather is bad and it for sure pays off. He is one of the hardest working people I know and that’s why I look up to him so much. Overcoming a few serious injuries and being around him for some, he always had the urge to go ride and get better and that is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. He always pushes me to try new things not only on a wakeboard, but in life too. He will push me to try a new trick on a wakeboard, and then push me in the gym right after and that’s just who he is. I’ve never met someone as talented and as motivated as Tony and I think he is a big reason why this sport is where it is today. It is so much fun to be able to hang out with not only one of the best riders in the entire world, but to be friends with one of the coolest people on this planet. I’m stoked to be his friend and he will always be my favorite wakeboarder.

What do you enjoy most about Wakeboarding?

My favorite part about riding is the feeling you get when you get up on your first line of the day. There is nothing like that sense of calmness when I first get up and shake the water off of me while hearing the boat and the music. Being able to look around and see the houses and the calm water makes me feel a type of way that nothing else can. Being on the water is one of the most important parts of my life and having the opportunity to go wakeboard in my back yard is something that is very special to me. But let’s be real, there is no better feeling than landing a new trick that you have been stuck on for weeks just grinding and falling over and over. You get so sick of falling and then you finally stomp a trick and you have the biggest smile on your face.

Why did you want to team up with Groove?

This is a vest that has been in the works for a long time. So many people have always wanted to be on the water and listen to music at the same time and here it is. The Groove Vest is going to change so many people’s lives for the better. Not only to be able to listen to music, but to be able to feel safe in a vest knowing if something happens, you will stay safe wearing the Groove vest. I am so excited to get mine and share it with all my friends. My friends and I used to tape a speaker to our vest to be able to play music and I can’t tell you how many portable speakers I have lost, but I can finally wear a vest I am proud to wear and not only listen to my favorite songs, but stay afloat after a bad crash or when I want to just relax in the water.

How will this vest change my riding?

I’ve said this many times and I will always say it. If you want to learn a new trick but are too scared, put your favorite hype song on and just send it. It is like being at the gym and hearing your favorite song or driving down the road and your favorite song comes on the radio. It puts you in a mood that hypes you up to a whole new level and this vest will do the same. I can’t wait to try this vest out and land some new tricks. Knowing I will have the best music playing right next to my ear when I ride knowing I don’t have to worry about something falling in the water or something getting wet is an absolute game changer. I know I am not the only one, but hearing my favorite songs gets me so hyper and amps me up so much, I am stoked to wear this vest and crank out some new tricks.
